We are fortunate to be deeply ingrained in the running community with most of our friends being runners who travel the country to try new events and who love to share their accomplishments. From Boston, New York, Big Sur and beyond, runners are like fishermen who make the big catch. Along with the big catch comes the exciting story of how it happened. Most runners have a story.

4) Why Do We Run?
It was last June 2010, that my running took a serious turn for the worse. After running for over 25 years, injury free, I developed plantar fasciitis. Yes, I kid you not, I have been injury free through multiple marathons, triathlons, Ironman, 1/2 Ironman. I may have stepped off a curb and sprained my ankle, but I have never experienced any bio-mechanical problems until I developed plantar fasciitis.
Like any good runner, I ran through it. I really didn’t have a clue what was wrong and I don’t think that I wanted to know that anything was wrong (denial). I figured one day the pain would just go away. By the end of August, after a particularly fast and strong run, I couldn’t walk. That’s when I knew I couldn’t run through it, so I made my first physiotherapy appointment. Read the rest of this post
What Foot Type Am I?
Nothing replaces educating yourself and understanding your own body/feet mechanics. Armed with this information you will be able to make the best decision as to the running shoe that is right for your foot type. This knowledge can also be useful if (hopefully never) you ever need to trouble-shoot your running injuries.
Simple Method to Determine your Foot Type
Well, most of you have heard the term “pronation”. Pronation refers to the foot’s rotational movement . Simply put, you will either underpronate (supinate), overpronate or not pronate at all. To get an idea of which category you fall into – take the water test. Dip your foot in water and step on something dry. This allows you to see the shape of your footprint in the watermark. From your footprint you should see one of the following pictures: Read the rest of this post
P90X Review
What is a P90X Review Doing on a Running Website?
You might wonder why I have written a P90X review for my running website. I know, I know, as runners we generally aren’t concerned with working out to x-training DVD’s. Firstly, it means that we are not running and secondly, it means that we are exercising indoors. Pardon me and congrats to those runners who are more diligent in their x-training efforts. But for those runners that aren’t, please listen when I say that every runner can benefit from these DVD workout routines.
Let me explain how I became hooked. Read the rest of this post
Running Kids
If you have followed my blog, you will have heard about my 3 children. At the time of writing, they are aged 13, 14 and 21 and I have been a runner for 20 years. Do the math and that means that I have run, competed in triathlons and marathons all the while I was raising my children. Somewhere along the way, my children turned into running kids.
Many runner/triathlon friends of mine have come to me asking advise on “how do you get your workouts in with your kids at home?” And I love telling them all the creative methods that I have sought out in the past in order to run, bike or swim. Instead of finding a babysitter, I always tried to have my kids somehow involved in what I was doing. Read the rest of this post
How to Treat Plantar Fasciitis
Update: Read about how I successfully cured my plantar fasciitis
My running has been on hold for over six months now. I have been living with Plantar Fasciitis and although, at times it is painful, I am starting to have good days when I think the plantar fasciitis is getting better. But then, for some apparent reason, the pain and burning flares up again. I have tried so many recommended remedies to treat plantar fasciitis and many were to no avail. My story hasn’t changed – I still can’t run. The persistence of the heel pain has been a major frustration for me, but have I ever learned a lot and the road to recovery is now starting.
It was very difficult to filter through the mounds of information that is available on how to treat plantar fasciitis. I tried. And, if you are also suffering from plantar fasciitis, then let me share with you what I have learned from my research and mistakes.
