Book Review: My Road to Rome – The Running Times of BJ McHugh

I have just finished reading a wonderfully inspirational memoir of a local Vancouver runner and legend, Betty Jean McHugh.  My good friend, who also happens to be a friend and running partner of Betty Jean, kindly gifted my husband and me with our very own autographed copy of the book: “My Road to Rome:  The Running Times of BJ McHugh“.  The book was fascinating and inspired me to the point that I found it hard to put down.

Betty Jean (BJ) is somewhat of a legend throughout running communities in my part of the world.  What makes her a legend?  Well, not only did she only take up running at the age of 52, she is the fastest senior women’s runner – in the world.  She has set and broken a multitude of world records in distances including 10K, half-marathon and the marathon.  And continues to do so… now in her 80′s. Running is a simple physical activity to prepare for. We just need to put on some comfortable exercise attire, lace up those running shoes, and we could go. There are some great iPhone Apps for running, that we could buy and download from iTunes.

Wildskins Arm Warmers–Take a Run on the Wild Side

wildskins

Let me tell you about a recent discovery of mine – “Wildskins“. Wildskins are a newly founded company (January 2011) that manufacture a product called arm skins or also called arm warmers. The concept behind Wildskins are to produce “arm warmers with a wild side”. And if you pop over to their website (wildskinsco.com), you will know what they mean. They have very wild, funky arm skin designs to choose from.

Why Do I Need Arm Skins?

I have to admit, even through my years of triathlons and running, and having seen other runners and cyclists wearing arm warmers, I had never tried them. That’s all changed now because recently Wildskins graciously gifted me with a very cool pair to try out (thank you Wildskins). I now wonder how I went all those years without. P90X Review

p90x-1

What is a P90X Review Doing on a Running Website?

You might wonder why I have written a P90X review for my running website. I know, I know, as runners we generally aren’t concerned with working out to x-training DVD’s. Firstly, it means that we are not running and secondly, it means that we are exercising indoors. Pardon me and congrats to those runners who are more diligent in their x-training efforts. But for those runners that aren’t, please listen when I say that every runner can benefit from these DVD workout routines.

Let me explain how I became hooked. Read the rest of this post

Running Kids

Happy Feet Healthy Food

If you have followed my blog, you will have heard about my 3 children. At the time of writing, they are aged 13, 14 and 21 and I have been a runner for 20 years. Do the math and that means that I have run, competed in triathlons and marathons all the while I was raising my children. Somewhere along the way, my children turned into running kids.

Many runner/triathlon friends of mine have come to me asking advise on “how do you get your workouts in with your kids at home?” And I love telling them all the creative methods that I have sought out in the past in order to run, bike or swim. Instead of finding a babysitter, I always tried to have my kids somehow involved in what I was doing. Read the rest of this post

Performance Apparel made from Trash

Read Why We Love This Running T

It’s fair to say that runners are generally an environmentally conscious group of people.  I, for one, strive to make a difference and am always on the lookout for ways that I can change my existing habits to be able to not leave a footprint and live a greener lifestyle.

Then I came across a company by the name of “Atayne”, who make performance apparel from trash.

Yup, you’ve read it correctly – trash!  They take what we think of as trash – plastic bottles, old clothing, old shoes, race numbers etc. and turn it out into high performance outdoor and athletic gear.

What Are The Performance Shirts Made From?

atayneI was able to wear test Atayne’s Grind Performance T during some of my recent runs.  First and foremost, it is made from 100% recycled water bottles.  Between eight to fourteen 20 oz. PET bottles goes into each shirt, depending on it’s size.

This equates to 100% recycled polyester, which has great moisture wicking qualities and dried super fast.

What We Really Liked

Who would have thought that wearing water bottles could be so comfortable and that’s one of the first things I noticed was the comfort.  The fabric feels soft and has a good deal of stretch which allows it to move nicely when you move.  To add to the comfort, the tee has been designed with flat seams so there are no friction points that could cause chaffing.

I really put Atayne’s Grind performance t to the test in the moisture wicking category.  I was wearing it during my runs on my recent trip to Mexico.  Temperatures were 85+ F and I was SWEATING.  I never once felt wet and sticky and thought that this performance running top did a great job of wicking sweat (moisture).

What They Say

atayne-jc Atayne claims the recycled material has a temperature regulating feature, so I made a point of taking note of this.  Usually in hot weather I only wear singlets as I find that I overheat very easily, however this definitely wasn’t the case with the Atayne performance tee.  I really noticed that I felt cool and there was good air movement.  Well, as cool as can be expected in those temperatures.

Atayne’s tag line states “Performance with a point of view” and their point of view doesn’t stop at recycled material.  They encourage customers to play hard in their performance tee, rinse it off in the shower and hang it to dry (a loop is sewn into the back of tee to promote hang drying).  Do this until you feel that it is necessary to wash and then don’t forget to use biodegradable laundry soap.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

At this time Atayne line of products is performance tops for both men and women and also for a variety of sports.

The performance T that I reviewed is the Women’s Grind Recycled Performance Running Top which only weighs only 3.6 ounces.  At the time of writing, the Grind comes in colors called Alpine Lake (blue), Mountain Meadow (green), Snow with Grey and Snow with Green and sizes from x-small to x-large.  The performance top is designed with raglan sleeves with an anti-chafe flatlock construction.

Where Can I Find the Best Price?

Atayne sells their products at a few select sports stores, but you can find and purchase all their performance products on the Atayne website.  Depending on the sports specific top that you choose, prices range from $24.00 up to $69.00 for the cycling jersey.

You may want to consider shirts for your sports team.  Atayne offers group pricing on any orders of 24 items or more.

Atayne has a great story with a green focus and I would encourage you to head over to their website www.atayne.com and see for yourself what they have to say and how they are contributing to our environment.

The Best Running Sunglasses: Bolle Dash

Read Why We Chose the Bolle Dash Performance Sunglasses

I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to try out Bolle’s newest model of sunglasses from their sport performance series – fittingly labeled the “Bolle Dash”. The conditions were perfect to put these Bolle running sunglasses to the test during my recent trip to Mexico where I went running on the beach most days. Weather was hot and and the sun was shining on every run. Between the brightness and the glare off the ocean water, sport sunglasses were a necessity.

What I Liked

The fit.
One of the biggest problem areas that I encounter with other running or sport sunglasses is the fit.  They tend to feel too snug on the sides of my head and above my ears and even the smallest amount of pressure annoys me to the point of hurting.  My compliments to Bolle for designing a pair of sunglasses that don’t even touch those areas but still provide a snug fit.  The Bolle Dash has been designed with an extremely durable, but lightweight nylon frame that bows out around your head with ThermoGrip® tips that make contact just behind the ear.

The ThermoGrip® tips are also found on the nose bridge of the Bolle Dash, which keep the sunglasses nicely in place no matter how much your head moves around.  Running in 85+ degrees, I was sweating quite a bit and the Bolle’s nose bridge never slipped.  I even tried shaking my head around to try to get them to move or slip, but they always stayed put.  The Bolle Dash has a very secure fit, yet provide pure comfort with no pressure points.

The Bolle Dash is an ideal fit for medium to large faces.

In addition, even with all the contributing sweat and heat, the Dash sunglasses had enough ventilation throughout that they never once fogged up on me.

What else do you need to know?

jacquie-bolle Runners typically wear sport sunglasses to:

  • cut out the glare
  • protect our eyes
  • look cool (joking)

The Dash does all the above.

The polarized lenses worked beautifully at keeping the glare from the ocean out of my eyes, with the lenses wrapping slightly around my head to avoid sun and glare from leaking in at the edges.

Runners are unavoidably exposed to the elements and a significant amount of UV rays during their runs.  While most are aware of the dangers that UV rays can cause, few are actually aware that UV exposure is the biggest risk factor for developing cataracts.  A serious health fact to take into consideration if you are a runner who presently doesn’t wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.  Hats off again to Bolle for developing sunglasses that have 100% UV protection.

One Final Feature

I must credit these sunglasses with being ultra lightweight.  The Dash has a half rim frame design which removes much of the frame from your field of vision allowing you to have a clear panoramic view.  Less frame also means less weight, and weightless is what they feel like.  Most of the time, I forgot that I was wearing them.

What colors are available?

  • The Bolle Dash are available with a Polarized Lense or a Non Polarized Lense;
  • The frame color is available in “Shiny Black” or “Dark Tortoise”; and
  • The lense color is availabe in TNS or TBL Dark.

Translation:

Polarized means that there is an optically precise filter embedded in the lens that eliminates most glare and reflected light. I have found that once I used polarized, I have never gone back to non-polarized. Polarized models are also more expensive to buy.

TNS Lense is a neutral density gray lens which provides true color definition. This lense is ideal for all-purpose use.

TLB (True Light Brown) Dark is a neutral density brown lense which also provides true color definition. This lense is suitable for high altitude, high glare situations.

Weight and Measurements

Weight:  0.72 oz.
Frame Width:  151.7 mm
Lens:  40.3 mm high x 67.7 mm wide
Bridge:  16.2 mm
Temple Length:  124.5 mm

Where Can I Get the Best Price?

The best price for the Bolle Dash at the time of writing was from Amazon. Amazon offers great customer service and typically always has comparable prices with a great choice of both the polarized and non-polarized models available.

The Nike Free Running Shoes – a Unique Pair of Sneakers

Want a sneaker that will help you run faster and more importantly injury free? Nike Free running shoes could be the answer. Strong feet are necessary to run injury free and fast, and the Nike Free 5.0 facilitates the natural motion of your feet which works to not only strengthen your feet, but your entire body.

Nike Free running shoes were inspired by the idea of barefoot training – running free. The sole on the sneaker is very flexible, so the shoe can bend as your foot dictates. Nike’s idea is that your foot controls the sneaker, not the other way around.

nike-free Most runners immobilize the foot, which results in muscle atrophy. These Nike Free shoes re-engage those muscles, which takes a bit of adjustment. So, if you think that this sneaker fits into your training program, then you need to gradually build them into your runs. The Free can be worn on all runs including trail running and uneven surfaces though it will take time to gain that strength in your feet. If you buy a pair of these running shoes, Nike includes a training program.

The Nike Free features a seamless upper consisting of a meshy material that is breathable, soft and smooth to the touch. The Free has multiple cuts in it to help natural movement of your foot, as well as provide a measure of ventilation. Reviews of the Nike Free say that they feel comfortable as it fits like a sock and allows the foot to bend freely with no resistance whatsoever. It’s a superb feeling as you run in the natural heel-to-toe pronation movement.

Nike Free shoes will let you experience the barefoot on the grass biomechanics that help train the foot and strengthen the natural movement of your feet. So, there you have it, a unique, lightweight (8.4 ounces) sneaker that gives you a leg up in training and allows your feet comfort as well as the freedom of movement. You will use muscles you never thought you had!
