How much energy do you have on your run? How quickly do you recover from a run? One of the key factors in your answer to these questions is in how healthy is your diet. By staying on top of nutrition, you can also stay on top of your health, so I though I’d include a post on the 10 healthiest foods. Try to include some of the foods listed below into your meals and snacks and you will feel the different. It’s a difficult task to distinguish the 10 healthiest foods and this list may differ depending on the country you live in. In the United States, there is debate between the nutritional experts over the 10 healthiest foods. The foods referenced in this article are recommended by clinical sources.
- Apples - summer is gone and so is the wide variety of fresh fruits, but it’s still the season for fresh apples. The saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is supported by the apple’s healthy qualities. The apple is a wonderful source of Vitamin C. They are also high in fiber.
- Almonds - like apples, almonds are high in fiber and they are also an excellent source of vitamin E.
- Blueberries - good source of fiber and vitamin C. They are also crucial in promoting healthy aging and preventing infection.
- Broccoli - known as a great source of vitamins A and C. Broccoli also helps prevent diabetes and heart disease.
- Beans - excellent source of fiber and protein. They are very low in fat and cholesterol and help prevent against cancer.
- Salmon - fish is a health food in itself and salmon is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and an excellent source of protein.
- Spinach has high levels of vitamins A and C. It is also said to promote healthy nails, skin and hair.
- Sweet potatoes - can get a bad rap because of the amount of sugar people think they contain. They are actually very good sources of potassium, vitamins B-6, C and E.
- Vegetable juice - a great way to capture of the nutrients and vitamins of whole fruits and vegetables that are lost during cooking. There are many varieties (V8 comes to mind) and some folks find it easier to drink juice than find servings of cooked vegetables and fruit throughout the day.
- Wheat Germ - has good levels of potassium, vitamin E and iron.
While the 10 healthiest foods are debatable, what’s more important than debating it, is to make the effort to include foods with the most nutritional benefits in your diet. Our bodies absorb nutrients better from real foods as opposed to nutritional supplements. Don’t worry about how it’s prepared, worry more about getting healthy foods into your diet. A European study concluded that it’s a common misconception that the best nutritional value comes from raw vegetables. They say that the body can absorb more important substances from cooked vegetables than raw ones.
