Key tips for the Garmin.

1) Turn on Auto-Lap (Training-->Training Options-->Auto-Lap-->By Distance). The watch will automatically give you a split every mile, or whatever other distance you want. General-->Data Fields, you can pick what items are displayed on each of the 3 screens (Main 1, Main 2, and Running). You can display anywhere from one to four items on each screen. Anyhow, instead Pace, use Pace - Lap). "Pace" attempts to give you your current speed, but since it's based on a limited number of GPS sample points, it's very jumpy and not very accurate. But Lap Pace give you the pace of your current split (best to have Auto-Lap set -- see above). It's a much more stable indicator of your current pace.

3) When I'm about to go run, I set down my Garmin outside, and then get ready. While I'm busy getting dressed, it finds the satellites and is ready to go when I am.

4) http://www.RunningAhead.com is a great online running that supports direct uploads from the Garmin. Automatically logs your run and generates a GoogleMap of the course! The forums and groups on this site are also excellent.

Those shiny foil blankets are made to keep runners warm after their race. Since running gear is typically lightweight and breathable, it is easy for runners to get cold after finishing a race (especially a longer run where the runner has expended all the body's energy into the run). These "space blankets" or "Heatsheets" are made out of polyethylene and will keep the runner warm.

I just recently watched a friend run the San Diego rock n' Roll marathon and though I could never see my self running let alone walking 26 miles, I have so much admiration for those who have accomplished such a goal. Just one question, what are those silly foil blanket thingys some runners wrap around themselves?

Congrats on your race! I just did my first run/walk 5k last summer. I have a new found respect for runners. The Fifth Third River Bank Run is big here in Michigan and I always wanted to be a participant. I have watched from the sidelines while my kids ran the marathon and always felt I wanted to be a part. Well I guess turning 60 next year motivated me to start training for the 5k. There where a lot of hills and even race walking was all I could handle. I did not think I could make it to the end. But I did. Its a blue ribbon I will hold dear for a long time.
