A New Women’s Course Record for the Vancouver Marathon

This year’s 14,395 runners, walkers and wheelchair participants were met with a cold and wet, 7:30 am start for the 35th running of the Vancouver Marathon.  This didn’t seem to slow down Malgorzata Sobanska from Poland as she walked away with not only $3,000 for winning the women’s division with a time of 2:37.06 (the fastest time in race history), but she also received an extra $2,500 for becoming the first woman runner to go under a time of 2:39:00. Kassahun Kabiso took the men’s title for the second year in a row with a time of 2:18.33.

It’s obvious why the Vancouver Marathon is Canada’s largest marthon, taking runners from 35 nations through 42 km of scenic Vancouver including False Creek, historical Gastown, Stanley Park and Kitsilano.  I’m sure that most tourists would rather view it by car, but there is nothing like the self-satisfaction that each marathon runner has when they have completed this route by foot. Of course, this doesn’t go without the help of over 2,000 volunteers that assist the marathoner’s in their personal goals.
